Measurement Software

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Everyone in the world of construction should know just how important proper measurements are to a job. This is just as true today as it was in the years past. If you are going to do a job, then you need accurate plans before you start. This is easier than ever though, thanks to the developments made in software. If you want to calculate square feet for a job, then you just need the right program.

Takeoff software has a lot of uses for proper planning. If you are working on an estimate for a project, then it’s indispensable. You can do a running display of it all and just click a few buttons to change the options. It’s that simple. You basically have a running, customizable blueprint that’s read for anything that you need. Since it’s a software program, it’s also able to then compile a square feet estimate as part of normal operations.

The idea should be simple then. If you are planning a job, you will need to be able to calculate square footage easily. Getting takeoff software that has the function is quite simple. If you have it running, then you will be able to have accurate measurement on the fly. This is just what the modern designer needs to stay ahead of the competition.

AdAware Developer Launches Avira-Based Antivirus

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Swedish security firm Lavasoft pioneered spyware protection with their venerable Ad-Aware utility. On Monday, the company released a new standalone antivirus program, Lavasoft Anti-Virus Helix, priced at $23.95.

Based on technology from Avira, the product cleans up viruses and other malicious software and also includes real-time protection to prevent further infection.

Users can schedule standard or custom scans on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Helix can also schedule a scan for every login, or at any interval. The product’s MailGuard feature scans incoming email and attachments and removes any viruses found. WebGuard prevents downloads of malicious files. According to Lavasoft, Helix protects against the worst threats – viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, bots, and more – without putting a drag on system performance.

While the product is too new to have certification from the major independent testing labs, the underlying Avira technology is well-regarded. It received the VB100% award from Virus Bulletin, and ICSA Labs certifies it for virus detection. AV-Comparatives rates it ADVANCED+ (the highest rating) for on-demand virus removal and ADVANCED for proactive non-signature-based detection. AV-Test calls it “very good” (the highest rating) for detection of malware and spyware, for fast scanning, and for fast response to new outbreaks. The product is currently under evaluation by PCMag, with a review to come.

EU’s plan to make Net safer for children

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

The European Union (EU) Tuesday said that it will spend 55 million euros ($70 million) in a five-year programme to make Internet safer for children.

The programme will co-fund projects to increase public awareness and create a network of contact points that allow reporting on illegal and harmful content and conduct, mainly on child sexual abuse material, grooming and cyber bullying.

Money will also be spent on the establishment of a knowledge base on new trends in the use of online technologies and their consequences to children’s lives by bringing together technical, psychological and sociological expertise.

While 75 percent of children aged between six and 17 years are already online and 50 percent of 10-year-olds have a mobile phone, a new EU-wide survey published Tuesday shows that 60 percent of EU parents are worried that their children might fall victim to online grooming and 54 percent that their children could be bullied online.

The programme will run between 2009 and 2013.

Health Tip: Having Sex Despite Illness

Friday, December 12th, 2008

People who have a chronic illness — which may include heart disease, diabetes or asthma — may have ongoing pain or fatigue that can hinder a healthy sex life.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers suggestions for how to enjoy sex, despite having a chronic illness:

  • Figure out what time of day you feel healthiest and most energized, and plan sex around those times.
  • Try to get plenty of rest, and make yourself feel as relaxed as possible.
  • Don’t have sex within two hours of eating.
  • If you take pain medicine, take it at least 30 minutes before having sex.
  • Drink only limited amounts of alcohol, and don’t use tobacco. Both can affect sexual performance.

Remains of Roman temple unearthed in Nottinghamshire

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Archaeologists have found the remains of a Roman temple in a town in Nottinghamshire, UK, a discovery that experts say could re-write the history books.

According to a report in the website nottingham.co.uk, a wall dating back as far as 43AD, made from large smooth-faced sandstone blocks, has been unearthed at the former Minster School site in Southwell in Nottinghamshire.

Twenty meters long by 2.5 meters tall, it is part of an emerging complex of buildings, including a Roman bathing monument known as a nymphaeum.

The site also contains what is believed to be a large villa.

“This is a monumental discovery. I have never seen Roman archaeology looking like that in Notts,” said Ursilla Spence, senior archaeological officer for Notts County Council. “It is starting to re-write our understanding of Notts in the Roman period,” she added.

“You don’t expect to see a wall of this masonry. It looks as if it could be a pagan Roman temple. Not only are they using these huge blocks, but they were using smooth faces. It is very much a grand building,” Spence explained.

“We certainly were not expecting anything like this. We had nothing to say it was there. To us, it is new and very exciting,” she added.

It is only the second Roman pagan temple to be discovered in Notts, the other was found in 1963 near to the site where the East Midlands Parkway Station is being built.

The Southwell find is significant because there is no evidence of a Roman settlement in the town.

According to Bryn Walters, director and secretary of the Association for Roman Archeology, “This could change the way the history of Southwell is looked at. It is interesting that there might be something else and has not been found yet.”

“If there is a temple, there is going to be something else not far away,” he added.

Walters said that the discovery of the temple could mean that what was thought to be a villa, previously discovered at the site, might be a lavish resting place for pilgrims.

“There may well be something of great importance there. It is potentially a very, very interesting site indeed. Potentially, Southwell is hiding a lot of information,” he said.

“We think it’s a whole complex. We have got most of the elements. I am expecting another structure to turn up this week,” said Spence.

Kindle Sold Out Until February

Monday, December 8th, 2008

This holiday season may have a dearth of options, and the current economic disaster is not be the only thing to blame. Right after an analyst decreed Apple’s iPod to be in short supply this season, Amazon’s Kindle eBook reader disappeared from shelves and will not be available until February of next year.

The Kindle has been out for a year, and has been enormously popular, so its vanishing makes a degree of sense. But one would figure Amazon understood the demand for its product and would stockpile appropriately.

Another theory is that Amazon might be making room for the updated Kindle 2.0, which was revealed in snippets earlier this year. Even though Amazon stated the Kindle 2.0 would not be released in 2008, the early photos and detailed specs made it clear that the company would have to vanquish its Kindle 1.0 stock to make room.

Meanwhile, shoppers for the eBook reader are out of luck. Unless, of course, you’re willing to brave eBays price gouging.
