What does it mean when pilots say…?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

For example when taking off or landing I sometimes hear something like ” 2 for 5″, or they say numbers like that. Is it something to do with the EPR? I have no idea.

It’s most likely their shorthand response to an altitude assignment. “Out of 2 for 5″ is more properly Leaving 2000 for 5000. (Feet MSL) On arrival the reverse would be true “Out of 5 for 2.” Not good radio discipline but as long as everyone involved understands what is being said-that’s actually what’s most important.
40 years in aviation.
………………
many pilots use those brief terms when referring to a change from a specified cruising altitude to an instructed climbing or descending altitude for example : you’re cruising at 2000′ and air control instructs you to climb to 5000′ some pilots will reply as “2 for 5″ or “2.5 to 5.5″ which is 2500′ to 5500′ .
…………..
normally, during take off or landing, that number represent the aircraft heading to (in compass, 360degree). In this case, the pilot will say together with the word “….runway 245,… (left/right turn during take off)…”
to show the altitude, the pilot won’t say 245 alone but together with thousand
working in aviation,
………………
Yes… out of 2 for 5 is correct.. that is a “readback” of an altitude change… albeit a poor one. Just answering in the affirmitive is not good enough… If you were cruising at 8 thousand… and the controller called and said “Goober 685, climb and maintain one six thousand” the correct response would be “Goober 685 leaving 8 thousand for one six thousand” IF you just said “Roger” he would/should call you back and confirm it…

As to “runway 245″ there are no runways with headings other than 10 degree increments, and they of course represent their magnetic reference. Depending on their mag dev, the runway would be rounded off to 25 in this case for 250 degrees magnetic

………..
Do you mean you’ve heard something like “Out of 2 for 5″? That means altitudes, in this case leaving 2000 for 5000. It’s a shorthand way to repeat back one’s altitude clearance/direction to ATC.

Why would kawasaki change the ninja 250 from fuel injection to carburation???

If you are refering to the 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R then I would have to say your either misinformed or just stupid. The Ninja 250R also the EX250 (as it was called until 2008) has never been a fuel injected motorcycle, except in Europe. Kawasaki made the European version of the 250R fuel injected to adhere to Europes strict emmisions laws. In the United States they opted for a carb to keep costs down and provide a bike that would be easier for beginning riders to work on.

………

Carburetor are like 10x simpler. They run really well when new. But they are very hard to keep running at top condition. And Kawasaki don’t care if the bike run like crap few years later

………

The U.S. version of the Ninja 250 has always been carbed.

They kept it this way to keep the cost down and keep it as an affordable beginner’s bike.

I have a chance to buy a 1984 v45 with 15,00 FLA miles on it - very clean-shld i jump onit? or low ball him?

Monday, July 7th, 2008

the price was $1800
1983 honda v45 magna

I missed my chance- i’m pissed —–
by the time i got back to the guy - to say i wnat it- 2 hours later- it was gone -

We really need to know the asking price to answer this.

The V45 and V65 had second gear problems in the transmission. You are probably safe as this was mostly a V65 problem as they are real hot rods.

These are good dependable bikes and it will run a very long time past 15K miles.

If it were me I would ask him if the transmission has been updated and when he says no lowball him.

Or buy a V65:)

…………..

I didn’t like the ‘84 V45 I test drove; the V65 handled much better but that is just my opinion; you did not say what he was asking for it and like someone said there tends to be a low spot in the 2nd gear. I would not give a whole lot for a V45 even clean

………….

Need more information to say. V45 what, Honda? If it’s a Honda, might want to check the year to see if it’s a V45 or a 700. (The V45 is a 750). How much does he want?

I have a scratch on the bodywork of my car, whats the best way to cover it up?

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

I heard of touch paints, but dont they blotch? I also heard of a polish, if this is the best method then where can I get it from and how much does it cost?

It seems to me that if the towing agency caused the scratches, they should pay a detailer to remove them. Just towing your car away does not give them the right to damage your car, I would report it to your Insurance company and get them to help you out. After all, it is vandalism and should be covered by “Comprehensive” which usually has not deductible. I had an idiot kick a dent in my fender and the Insurance company paid me 440 dollars to get it fixed. There was no requirement that I fix it either. I could have just pocketed the money.

Now about that scratch. A colored polish would be best. When the factory paints a car it is with flat paint, then they spray it with Polyurethane to give it he gloss. Touch up paints, even in spray cans, will not come out shiny even if you rub it down with rubbing compound. Please don’t ruin that shiny beauty. Bottled touch ups to blob. Can’t fix it with a brush.

——

Depending on how old your car is, I would most likely suggest getting your car “Compounded” first. Compounding can remove small scratches from bodywork.

The one problem is if your scratch is on a bumper made of polyurethane, or some other plastic. Those scratches are near impossible to buff out.

The last resort will be a touch up. If done right, they don’t blotch. I had this done to my last car, a volvo with a dark blue paint, and it worked wonders.
